The idea of the map actually doesn't personally bug me. It's just lifeless and empty. It also doesn't work for a singleplayer game either.
I just can't wait for the schedule to be released!

I like how Drocis blames changing the overland map on a waste of development time. What they originally developed didn't look anything like the original youtube sales pitch, and players had a right to gripe they gave an overland map that sucked compared to what was expected.
But POTs, oh right Drocis. They were originally called "castles and keeps that people can share" and bloated it into full scenes. No time wasted there. No, none at all.

I can't blame them for trying something new with the map, especially with Stephen's talent at the ready. Though I would have like to have seen a legitimate way for them to have measured who liked which map more and at which numbers. I suppose in the end they should have learned a good lesson there; don't deviate from the kickstart parameters...

I genuinely liked the cloth map style and thought it was different, unique and fit more with the idea of moving from area to area than the current version but I understand people being angry with it being so different from the original KS video.

Look, it isn't the map. It was never the fucking map. It was the fact that they talked about an interactive sandbox that pales in comparison to 1990's False Prophet when it's supposed to "create a virtual world more interactive than Ultima VII". Focus on exploration and discovery? Immersive world? All this is verbatim from the Kickstarter, by the way. And I get they're going for the older school Ultimas, but that just isn't what people expect. Not to mention it's a lot of shitty walking around with absolutely nothing happening. The sad part? That's better than things happening. Every fucking time something happens, goddamn loading screen. It doesn't matter if it only last 10 seconds (which it fucking doesn't), it's the fact that when you finally do get into the scene, it's the breadth of a flea's dick with tree walls (or did they finally replace those 90's era tree walls?) and before you know it, bam, fucking loading screen. Now back to wandering the open map. Do you look for random encounters? If you want more loading screens, sure. And that's assuming you're not waiting around to fight some more fucking wolves or skeletons or giant spiders. Woo-fucking-hoo. Eat a dick.

Tree walls are still there.
Putting things on the ground: Ultima VII - Yes SotA - No
Chucking potions at mobs: Ultima VII - Yes SotA - No
Putting things on things to activate things to get things: Ultima VII - Yes SotA - No
Interesting NPCs Ultima VII - Yes SotA - No
and so on.

I suppose in the end they should have learned a good lesson there; don't deviate from the kickstart parameters... Except that kind of map was not new at all. It just happened to not be what they promoted and they wasted time, trying to save time, by taking the cheaper route and then having to correct that nonsense.

The map they have now also isn't new. It's a bad version of Warband's map.
War Band was developed by an Indie producer, a smaller team in Turkey. They now have 42 employees, but did not when they first came out with Warband.

According to Lum, who responded to me when I was still on the forums, he claims all those loading screens are going to "go away" so that people don't realize every scene is instanced. I'll believe it when I see it.

I'll believe it when I see it. With unity you can do that... Sort of. It just means you need to load the scene while you're in it. So, you enter scene. You are PKd in scene before your player even spawns on your screen. Awesome eh? To get around that, they will do the same thing and then place a 10 second freeze on your character so you can't move or take damage while the basics load around you and it will just be crap. Chris however vowed not to do such a thing during kickstart, day one.

I vaguely recall some of those discussions. They're going to have to do some serious tweaking to pull it off.

Well they've already begun the process sort of, there are already two options in video options on how house lot crap is loaded. It is on the fly always and either short visual range loading or wide visual range loading, to over simplify it.

In short, there will be loading screens. They may not be what you see now, they may not be 30 seconds to a minute long, but they will be there, and in greater numbers.

The world map kind of reminds me of a few browser games, to the effect that you have a bunch of your own cities and attack other cities on a turn/time-tick basis. There are a lot of POTs out there already and that is going to increase until they are finished adding them. If I were to accept POTs right, and have no problem with them... Totally hypothetically. Then I would have to say that not allowing later POT purchasers to put their town on the map is kind of a big deal. It isn't fair because none of this was planned properly to begin with or stated when POTs first came out. Now, if Port hadn't have done this, then yeah, the world map would be literally covered with POTs every step you take eventually. I think the map would look a lot better without all those POTs on them. It doesn't look half bad at all but I'll paraphrase Rune here and say that a lot more could be added to it in order to make it a lot more interesting and interactive. Just think what would have been possible having all that POT time removed and then focused back into this game
