Hurrah! Fishing! It's not to everyone's taste, but some of us love it! Let's see what we can actually do...!
So... it's basically just standard MMO fishing yet again? Use power, random fish drop? But it's alpha, so...
Oh, we have to wait long term again before it's anything but the basics too; So after months of trailing fishing, all we get is a casting animation, a line of code setting a timer and random roll, and I'll be willing to wager the chance to catch only the few fish that were already modelled in game. And a list of promised features for later. Maybe it'll be complete in Episode 2? When it's going to just be a literal UO mixed with World Of Warcraft system even at best. And I enjoyed fishing in those, caught every possible rare fish in UO, including the ones in the middle of Peerless spawns, won the original fishing contests in WoW twice over to get both rewards, but still... it's not exactly visionary is it? Or moving in any sort of confidence building pace...
Still, Fishing! I can't wait to...
... oh wait, we can't go to sea either, and no one but the real life very rich can afford a Riverside home or a stationary ship...
... I can't wait to stand in the swamp, and get trophy Catfish! In Episode 2. Maybe. Look, Portalarium, I love fishing I really do. And I want to cheer the system you might, eventually, have for us. But come on, behind the enthusiastic promises, why should we trust you? See this, that you illustrated fishing with?
That's the Rod Of Prosperity. WHICH YOU DISCONTINUED TO MANIPULATE THE RARES MARKET. People can't buy that any more. But I had one, once. Picked it up in preparation for some awesome fishing adventures. Sold it with my account recently; but it wouldn't work until you add in the rarer fish anyway, would it? So how long are you expecting people to sit on incomplete systems that break the products you sold them?
You could change this. You could say "Ok, stop work on Player Owned Towns and Fundraising. Let's actually get some fun gameplay into the game first". Doesn't have to be fishing... could be anything really, but the important thing is, you'd earn a lot more new players, and public support, if you actually let people do something interesting in game, and use their low end store purchases properly. Just think, you could have added just the trophy stats now; is a random variable really that hard to code? 3 fish types, make one "rarer", say the Salmon, add the Rods ability to make that rarer fish slightly less rare, voila people can now catch fish, people with the rods have a better chance of getting an impressive Salmon, lots of testing done, bragging on the forums, lots of FUN! Reset 'em all at launch and move the rarity to the actual fish it's supposed to be on, but people get to actually fish for pleasure short term.
But you didn't. Why? And why can't you see that yet another half-assed update (with enthusiastic press release!) whilst doing a telethon that just went on and on about fan service to the mega-rich yet again just adds to the piling up public distrust? What's the point of logging in just to press a button that rolls a random number between 1 and 3?
Sigh...
To fish, you need bait in your inventory and your fishing pole equipped (each cast uses 1 bait). You then use your “Cast” ability to send the bait/hook/bobber to a selected target in the water (similar to how we target spells like Fireball). As soon as you cast your line, a timer starts and while that timer runs you have a chance to catch a fish (or maybe a boot!). If the timer runs out before you catch anything you have to recast. In R22 there will be three fish types and at least one cooking recipe for each (as well as Butchery recipes to clean and filet the fish).

Long term, we have tons of features we will be adding to fishing....
