So, after totally walking back and nerfing the award to create an NPC, they allow someone in the community to write 95,000 words of NPC dialogue and put it into the game. insanemembrain.wordpress.com/2015/08/07/sota-ks-pledge-reward-create-your-npc-walked-back-enderandrew-writes-all-npc-dialogue/Fail Portalarium, fail. This article links to the previous article where I listed all of the areas the community crowdsource effort is currently being cornholed about just as hard as this example: Lore for Shroud of the Avatar Writing for Shroud of the Avatar NPC Dialogue for Shroud of the Avatar Housing & Town Placement & Functions for Shroud of the Avatar Special Asset Kit Access for Shroud of the Avatar Scene creation for Shroud of the Avatar Combat Testing for Shroud of the Avatar Skills Testing for Shroud of the Avatar

This is so out there, even for Portalarium, that it is difficult for me to believe. Dumping an entire KS reward or two is dirty enough (and against KS TOS?), but quietly bringing it back exclusively for one member is just asking for community backlash. Going even further and offering that reward x100 for that one player is insane. Are they consciously trying to build dissent, or have they completely lost sight of the community?

Also this is the problem with a kick start. In theory and for certain things, it is great. For a video game? It shouldn't be allowed.
Port said "create an NPC" well we Ultima players know what great NPCs are and we were fucking ready. Then they come out "ohhh welllll we just meant name and profession"
lulz. Weak, yet very effective in this case.

That whole thing is totally messed up. I remember a time when enderandrew was so pissed at Port and the community, he left the forums for a good bit of time. Now he is sucking up and gets a writing job unpaid on top of it. There's a lot going on behind the scenes we can't begin to know. But on the surface, it's definitely messed up.
I read the thread you referred to in that article, and the related article. Never knew you quoted me back then. lol I was very involved in that discussion on NPC companions. I was alarmed back then, and nothing's changed and only gotten worse.

It appears, what we're getting now is pretty much the norm and what we'll end up with throughout the lifespan of this game. However short or long. Yes, I've quoted you a few times I believe your husband once also with an example of Moderator bias On enderandrew: Yes, at one time I thought him to be on the level. He got upset because of how he was being treated by the moderators, That is very understandable, the moderators in the Shroud of the Avatar forum have done at least as much damage and are a big cause to the problems we're experiencing. As he left, Captain Jack Sparrow created a poll of support, which was actually completley deleted! The logic here, is, fucking astonishing! : insanemembrain.wordpress.com/2014/06/19/enderandrew-leaves-sota-forum-community-members-punished-for-supporting-him/So, I then gave enderandrew a funny award, intended to be given to people in the community who are doing something with their own free time in which are under-appreciated, chastised for it, or ignored: insanemembrain.wordpress.com/2014/12/30/and-the-award-goes-to-enderandrew/insanemembrain.wordpress.com/the-den-of-terror/proclemation-deformation/I took a lot of flack from some of you guys about handing out any sort of awards at all lulz. I think many here at that time didn't quite understand, I am not made from %100 hate My main point on all that was, hey look guys & portalarium, there are people doing a lot of shit who aren't being awarded by you, while your fucking forum favourites are being rewarded out the ass with ONBEs, Warrants, in-game perks, special Dev considerations. But I too think that wasn't read into by a lot of people. I hate spelling shit out though, so I didn't really address those concerns that much and just kept writing crap So, for a member of the community like him to get chased away, come back, start submitting shit on the sly to act like this... really should be a revocation of that award or at the very least a new one created for really special assholes and awarded to him

I don't put the blame on him though, at least not much of it. If I were still enamored and Portalarium and I had the time and skill to write for them, I can't say I'd pass up the chance. You don't often get the chance to essentially write dialogue, tons and tons of dialogue, for a game being created by someone who is a legend in the genre and despite his faults, RG is that.
Where I think it gets shitty is that Portalarium would allow this and not open it up to people or for at least not compensating him for it. If they aren't, they are flat out taking full advantage of a community member for their own financial benefit and that's bullshit, whether you think enderandrew should know better or not, Port should. I just can't blame the guy for taking the opportunity though. If Garriott had come to me on the sly and asked me to write shit for UO for free, I'd have done it. It also would have been absolutely terrible.

Hard to know what I would do even in that situation. But just so you know, if they gave me an ONBE I would pack up my blog & forum & sell all you fuckers out for it. Kidding

Yeah, there were a few Unity scene jams, maybe two writing comps, and.... I think that is it. I think they would all magically have more time if someone over there was able to stand up and tell them a bit of common sense. Ok kids, turn off your PMs, communications are going through me now. Then just /handle it.

So guess what everyone. enderandrew's writing for NPCs is actually going to make it into your Single Player OFFLINE game. Not only that, but NPC dialogue you get from enderandrew in your SPOffline mode will refer to... Player Owned Towns! Keeps getting better and better.
There are stories that are in PoTs but they are those of the people who live there and will not be reflected back into the main storyline (which has for the most part been written already anyway). PaxLair is very popular and occasionally you may see a player-submitted NPC (such as the one in Ardoris) who refers to it, but those are not part of the main storyline.
(Whether or not they are part of the lore of the game depends on who is asking and what is important to them; their answer is as valid as yours, but that is more a cultural question and less one of implementation.)

This is an example of a great idea with a less-than-ideal implementation.

I mean that the idea to crowdsource this kind of material is great, but since only one person is getting to be involved in it, it is not being implemented well. It doesn't help that some folks pledged a lot of money to design an NPC.

It doesn't help that some folks pledged a lot of money to design an NPC. I did do that... I'm not sure, I think the idea is awesome. But they needed structure, implementation as you mentioned is the key. If they had the structure to collect, parse, and input data collected from the crowd it could have been great I believe. The only danger in that area then becomes the Whales, empire builders looking to have only their stuff in and to squash everybody else.

A comment on Steam by a Dev+ member whom should really know better. The story for SotA isn't out yet, nor will it be until release. Your best bet for knowing if it's "for you" is to read the prequel novel "Blade of the Avatar" (or as much of it as is currently available online[www.goodreads.com]), since it's written by the same people. That said, keep in mind that the SotA team are not writing all the characters in the game. According to the general SotA forums, they've crowdsourced much of their NPC dialogue from their fans.
Maybe that person was being very crafty by indicating general forums If so, very much like that under the table kick!
