Other than the reason that it is a personal hobby of Richard Garriott, why? Why not just focus on something like Treasure Hunting?
I don't want players to make quests, I want Developers to make quests. Well, I did before I saw some of the stuff being cranked out at the moment. I just want to grief the chests, and I am probably going to, hard. So in the end I guess not a total loss for me!

The geocaching mechanic, the way it looks like it is to be introduced, really makes this game feel more and more like a retirement home. "All right, guys and gals, time to go room to room looking for that box that might have some great goodies! ... And we already have a winner! Marge with a $10 gift certificate to our off-site wholesaler! Now you can buy your grandkids some really shitty plastic earrings or maybe a talking watch that they'll love!"
SotA is the place old gamers go to die.

Indeed. And I would classify this as more shit getting in the way of the core game. More Scope Creep.
