See this:https://www.shroudoftheavatar.com/forum/index.php?threads/captcha-for-posting.27254/ I can't say I've actually been on a lot of forums which restrict you to paid members only, certainly not games... I can't think of any at all right now that have ever done that to a community. These guys, these fucking guys, have the fucking nerve to tell us that it is our privilege to post into their forum at the same time telling us that they will take it away from us if they can't protect themselves? Words. Fail. Me. insanemembrain.wordpress.com/2015/05/26/portalarium-cant-protect-their-forum-punishes-threatens-community/

Only one I can think of off hand is ESO.
And I totally understand that one, cause it is a mega AAA title with multiple languages -- so extra effort to remove the SPAM at overhead reduced costs, totally understand.
SOTA does not even rise to the level of a single platform distro of that game however, nor are ANY OTHER GAMES in decades of playing and hammering forums, have I seen such a botched way to keep out spam.
First line of defense is to CAPTCHA the fucking new account registration -- at least then they cant just spam endlessly without an account. smh

Little by little they are circling the wagons and creating a nice little closed community. In fact, seems like everything Port and their big backers do discourages multiplayer.
This game will be dead on the vine at release. Might as well kill it now.

DS, coming hard at the spammers with the "if you don't stop doing that, the whole class will pay" approach. Fail.
Ugh, I like how so many on the forums first guessed that it was somebody who was recently banned (e.g., Jacob). Most of them really are clueless about how little most of us "trolls" care about this game now.
Oh, and just as Joviex said in a comment on IM's article, these fake accounts and the inflated numbers have been a known issue for a long time, but Port just ignored it (presumably because the inflated numbers somehow looked better???). Now that a problem finally emerges from their inaction, their reaction is to lock down the whole forum and impede your average gamer's interest well beyond what a captcha at registration would have done.
^Port: forever ignoring the old adage about how an ounce of prevention is equal to a pound of the cure.... =/

Wonder if that will change when the game goes live. Probably not.

Wonder if that will change when the game goes live. Probably not. It makes me wonder if it's a deliberate tactic for game development these days. Locking out the people who haven't invested helps reduce the negative feedback because as we have all seen, high level backers will take the Mulder "I want to believe" approach, most likely to protect their investment, whether it's conscious or not. This gives the false impression that the game is fine and encourages additional backers. It's a brilliant move. Get your investors to sell the snake-oil for you and you can wash your hands of a failed game later claiming, "but we were getting such great feedback".
