There are some well versed UO veterans here. Why was atrophy added into Ultima Online? It only lasted, like, a year or two, tops. I think the idea was so you couldn't min-max, which is exactly what happened when they allowed locking skills. I think it was also to make the skills more meaningful; seeing a Grandmaster anything meant they were active and good at what they did. Unless you're talking about statloss, which was supposedly a punishment for being red and sucking.

Nope, not stat loss. Just wondering what the foundations were of a skill based time suck was in UO. I knew it was short lived, but didn't know it was that short lived!

I'm guessing as soon as the UO Devs put it in and gauged the reaction from real casual players, they saw their mistake and took it out right quick.

I barely remembered skill atrophy, but I think it was to encourage players to log in regularly and not get bored because they were 7X GM skills. I mean, once you achieve the top skill level, then what? It was a bit of a dumb idea. But that's about all I remember. That, and when they then allowed people to get 120 skill, rather than 100.

Yeah, people seem to do better when they get more and not when they have things taken away from the work they've already put in. Funny that!

On release, you couldn't lock skills. Players would light campfires at the banks to grief players as it would make your camping skill go up, decreasing other stats if you were maxed.

Didn't Spirit Speak do the same? Been too long since I played I don't think so. I think people just spammed it to raise Int. Spirit Speak as a passive didn't work until after AoS, I think. I'm not against skill loss or a light form of atrophy, but don't open it up to penalizing players because they can't choose what skills to use or not use.
