I've said it before that it is the closest thing to UO that I've played and if that interests you a lot than this is probably the game to try out. I think it's a decent game build wise and the development team has been great, they actually come to play and talk sometimes. The only negative issue that I have with the game is my own personal taste, I'm really over the top down, move with your mouse etc trend, not a fan of funky looking really outdated looking games. I also need free aim action based combat or else combat will be boring and way to easy for me. You can't even jump in Shards and that to me just feels super weird now.

They surely would change that, no?

There barely are any skills to use or spells to use in game yet but from what I've seen it's all auto attack, with some skills that you prefire the skill than select a target to use it on. I can't see them changing it either since it seems like their combat/skill system is already built around it. Atleast there are no ugly huge targeting markers or floaters besides the nametags. They were talking about putting in a grid view backpack with an auto loot function, I'm really disappointed in that, I hate easy casual mechanics like that. They did say it'll probably be an option that the admin can choose to turn on or off though. Also there seems to be no blocking at all, just like Shroud, no active player skills anywhere, = boring.

Can I ask you guys, what is bad about auto attack in your opinion?
If you manage movement, spells, abilities, other and let system attack, what is the shortfall?

I don't think there's a problem with it. It's not a deal breaker to me. I've played games that have it, and don't have it. Just a different style.

Yeah that is cool. I oddly find myself not finding too many things wrong with an auto attack system. I suppose you could say it "isnt twitch" or "no skill" and all that shit? But you can add skill in with movement, bla bla.
I was just curious of others opinions.

First off the movement involved with an auto attack system is completely different than a free aim system. I often see retards in auto attack games that have no blocking running all over the place, like they think it's more effective than standing in one spot mashing buttons. Rarely is movement key to survival in auto attack games, usually it just involves standing in one spot, pressing buttons and the occasional running away if a aoe goes off or something super dangerous threatens the spot you are standing on. With a free aim system, there is way more player involvement and that's where it shines, the free aim system can actually take skill, where auto attack is just standing there mashing buttons usually. So with free aim system depending on the game, you usually can charge weapons, do different swings, can block, can dodge. It's a completely different game and not only from a character stand point, the ai has to be coded differently too. There seems to be a trend with a lot of the auto attack games where they don't even add in blocking, even though you equip a shield, it just adds ac. You pretty much stand there with auto attack with no active player defenses, just a bunch of behind the scenes statistical crap, modifiers. Free aim, depending on the system, you can get good at blocking, dodging to over come other people, multiple people if good enough. I could go on about a lot of different situations, I guess the point that I'm trying to make is that auto attack is not an active skillful player style and Free aim is. Free aim offers much more to learn, to do, to get better at, it offerrs mechanics to get better at that will let you be better than someone else. I've talked about this subject with many people throughout games and there is always a bunch of casuals that claim auto attack takes skill. At my level of gaming, I'm not seeing it, I'm passed that and need a system that offers a challenge. The only auto attack system that I've seen that took some skill was in UO and that was all because of the interrupt system and having good timing with it but when you pve'd with the UO auto attack system, it was complete boring garbage. I haven't seen an auto attack game since that takes skill. Also is seems to be the normal for an auto attack game to be top down, some weird camera angle, with floaters, big colorful text, all crap I don't want to see.

But you can add skill in with movement, bla bla. I was just curious of others opinions. I agree. I don't particularly have an issue with auto-attack. It's a DPS element that you can spec into, in a way, where some classes benefit from it (fast attackers in melee) and others don't (usually mages or ranged characters). It's just another element of attack, to me. Abilities and positioning mean more anyway, and if they don't, it's a bad game.

Quick update: I'm backing the game at the pre-alpha Admin level so I'm currently running a server locally so I can start learn how to mod it and then build in preparation for release. Those of you who pledged, I'll be happy to open it up once it's ready.
My question to all of you is: Let's build a rule-set together. Please list ideas here and I'll see what's possible. My preference is to lean toward the UO Siege ruleset, but I'm open to suggestions.

I'm decompling the game to see how far someone can go with scripting before I join any player ran server. But full loot, hardcore, gas chambers to gas the random carebear casuals that wonder in are a must have.

So grim Albion Online or Shards Online? what's your thoughts on each one?

So grim Albion Online or Shards Online? what's your thoughts on each one? We need to know. Albion looks like it lacks significant depth, personally. Shards seems like it could be graphically superior UO emulation (and some of the best times I've had were on freeshards).

Shards seems like it could be graphically superior UO emulation (and some of the best times I've had were on freeshards). Wow, hard question. Shards is A LOT like UO. It's really rough at this stage and I'm mostly learning how to mod a server, so I'm not really playing the game much. Albion is a lot more polished and it's shaping up to be a great game. It takes some ideas from UO, some from DAoC, and does a decent job of mixing them. I think of it more like a MOBA version of UO, where Shards is more like a traditional version of UO. Albion is all about PvP and GvG. I'll most likely play both, since they will both be FTP.

Yeah, that's what it looked like to me, like it was all the PvP of UO and DAoC. Shards, on the other hand, seems different in that regard. Good to know my first impressions were relatively accurate.

I want to spend more time with both of them, but I got sucked into the new timelocked EQ2 server (PvP). Having a blast. I also found my old character and he's pretty much right where I left him. ;-) I had forgotten how amazing housing is in EQ2.

I've seen some pretty amazing places in that game. Ya the progression servers are actually fairly active as well. EQ progression had hour que's when it first popped up.

Playing Shards Online at the moment. First feedback: I can starve. Loved that when the message did show up: You are Hungry I am a Rogue and the overall first impression - what always is important - i did feel good. As i am someone who is looking for a Ultima Online what is not Ultima Online and is a fresh new version - this looks promising nice. The harvesting is more fun the sonta, the combat as simple as it is on Shards Online is more my kind. Well even more then Albion Online it is for me from the first impression. And i could lay down in a bed. And i can lay stuff on the ground.

well it was my first impression only.
i also noticed that the map is still very small. they have not much funding. 2700 backers total. so there is a challenge.
Crowfall has same amount as SotA i think almost. as 5 Million was private investment. so they have alot more cash to play with.
Shard needs more backers
