Read that aloud to you-know-who and he was cracking up laughing pretty loud. Of course, so was I.

I've been experimenting with new (to me) games and communities recently, and the similarities and differences between moderation teams has proved insightful. Although they all have their own quirks and cultures, which greatly inform their interpretations and applications of rules, the common theme among them, which I only now realize has proven true, as far as I can tell, of every moderation team I've ever come into contact with, is that they all believe in their moderating decisions (though some surely experience self-doubt). We have never moderated posts because of someones views. The only time we moderate is if a post is against the rules. Also, every action we take is heavily documented and scrutinized by community management. It still baffles me to this day that some people seem to think we're out to get them or that we're taking sides/opinions on a certain matter. Our only concern as mods is that the rules are followed in the way we have been asked to enforce them. I believe that Mystic and his fellow staff believe this, and strive towards this, even if the last caveat of his post points to personal confliction with some of the executive prescriptions. Of course, I also believe that the moderation there has been the single most ineffective community-management effort I've ever seen, but I highly doubt that there is the kind of malicious intentions described by some people there. You are actively censoring and bullying people with different viewpoints and deleting criticism. I can understand if you delete direct insults etc... but not everything you feel offended by. Current moderators failed miserably in the past in that regard. Just ask anyone in here long enough where some of the people went.... It's nice to see that some people heard and continue to hear our voices. I'm sure Vallo, as well as everyone else who disapproves of SotA and the people involved in its development, believe that they are just in their judgments, not unlike how the moderators perceive their own judgments. Personally, I'm convinced that the purely malicious intentions sometimes described on both forums are inaccurate. I think that SotA's community-management failings are just a symptom of a larger failing. All video-game developers have to face a lot of criticism, and inevitably some of it will come across as venomous, or even blatantly hateful. I suspect that there comes a point in every moderator's service when they find themselves censoring what is only a vaguely inappropriate comment due in part because of the comment or poster's strong stance against the game. After all, the very purpose of moderation is to benefit the game, so a conflict of interest between damage-control and Justice is inevitable. In games which prove particularly poor or expensive (or both), the amount of criticism goes up, sometimes dramatically, and as moderators are increasingly challenged to uphold painstakingly vague rules to the end of benefiting the game and community, the line between hate and criticism begins to blur, not just for the moderators, but for the posters too. I think this image sums it up concisely.

Since some of those folks appear to check here, I'll just throw out there that I didn't even have to post to the forums to receive a ban warning. I reported a very popular user for spamming a thread and was given a warning for abuse of the report system because I reported each of their posts as spam. That users posts were never deleted.
The problem isn't just that some users are banned, it's that many high dollar backers are not. Envy, Themo Lock etc have all received moderation numerous times without bans. Envy has openly talked about how he's been moderated many times. Themo was flat out toxic resorting to profanity on several occasions, profanity directed at other users. Even if every ban from the forums was justified, there are many who remain that have history of violating forum rules. There are posters there who have referred to people as 'autistic' as an insult whose posting privileges remain.
Hell, you had Themo Lock telling users to 'fuck off' and when he states he is leaving the game the community mourns.
If nothing else, there seems a greater understanding of supporters and high financially invested folks losing their cool. A willingness to accept their indiscretions as momentary lapses, however frequent or egregious exists in both the moderators and the community. Hell the 'autism' insult was up for multi days without moderation and it took a forum user making a post on Steam for anyone at Portalarium to take action.
Those often critical of the game don't seem to receive the same understanding, from either the community or the moderators.
I wouldnt even say it's intentional. There's no doubt the mods are loyal and devout fans. Criticism is by nature negative and any negativity is easily cast as toxicity.
Edit: Ah BerekYour negative impression of our game interferes with the positive community we have and is therefore toxic. Please be positive or risk a ban.
Edit 2: After posting this I noticed that Envy claimed he'd been banned in a Steam review.

So cat piss lady Firelotus was demoted back to the trailer park and replaced by Berek, who is truly the new Queen of Toxic.

I'm guessing Firelotus received a lateral move or promotion as she's working exclusively on game story content now as far as I know.
It's odd, considering Rustic Dragon held a similar position and they dumped him after a year. Peculiar they didn't hire him back. The community loved him.

65% on steam and dropping. 112 Peak in the last 30 days. 240 is the most, at peak, that has ever logged on through Steam, and that was back in November 2014. Millions of interested players are comin', I tell ya. They're just waiting for release in July.

So many lies in that thread. They don't moderate fairly at all. They ban on suspicions and say so from high level backers like the Baron.
Many good posters permanently banned from having multiple infractions for things that were minor or wouldn't be an infraction for others. No recourse if you do get an infraction because the person reviewing it is the person who gave it to you!
That's not even getting into them outright lying about what users have said or done, you don't have to look far on that, just look at the reddit page and the thread about banning players to keep them quiet.
