So is his argument keep paying to get the game they want? Or that they need to launch because money's about to run out? It sounds like in his last sentence he's saying both.

I think option A. Keep paying to get the game you want, no matter the state of or the length of time it takes to get the software.

I'm just anxiously awaiting news on the release date. Anyone know when the release date is for news on the release date? Well I stopped counting after 2-3 months for the PvP document Chris was supposed to release last year, so who knows. I don't think they have a sense of accountability.

I don't think they have a sense of accountability. Until someone takes a piece out of a kickstart project that has failed to deliver, there never will be any accountability. Even despite this:

The only thing that will affect these folks, with rose colored glasses, is if a hammer hits them on the head. And even then, they'll just say, oh gosh, you must not have meant to hit me with that. Must've been some weird mistake.

This also smells like Dev+ info, no?
"I think after R26 we have one more wipe before 'final wipe' I don't remember.. but development will continue after final wipe. It's a little confusing for some.. we'll have a date for the wipe but not a release date. It's a little weird.. BUT.. it's still final wipe so we can build up out characters pre-launch. It's supposed to be publically announced by the end of the month I believe"

That info has been public. Chris posted in the Steam forums about the number of wipes left back in November. Starr posted about the final wipe about a month ago. They also announced that it's to be announced before the end of the month. Bowen is trying to dance around leakkng dev+ info and he doesn't even have to.

but development will continue after final wipe This though. This indicates that the final wipe obviously takes place during an unfinished alpha/beta stage of the game and that people will carry over possible exploit/bug/unbalanced gains over into the game long term... I don't remember hearing that!

The unfortunate message I read, from both the SotA forums and what they're trying hard not to say on those forums is, there's something disturbing the force.
Disturbing enough they're trying to cushion it to the plebs.

You know, I can't wait for the final wipe. I can't wait for my character to be finalised via a badly designed Question and Answer process that might throw me into a spec I had no intention of taking. I can't wait to play hour after hour of horrible combat offline, because if I do it online, there's very little I can do or own. I can't wait to find nothing I do offline carries over online, so I'll need to do it all again if I ever want to keep up with the core audience who spent thousands; I can't wait to not be allowed into their emoting on a table parties too, because they've become so intolerant of criticism, no matter how well meant. I can't wait to try and encourage my real life friends to play again, by pointing out how many hours it'll be before we can all cram into a tiny row house together... I can't... ahh fuck it, I can't keep this up any longer either.
Seriously, I know I'm out of the content loop as I haven't played for months except to make my reviews, but how can they possibly think the game is in any state to go permanent now? I know the community wants it too, because they want to etch in stone their advantages and start permanently enjoying them as soon as possible. But the basic game is an empty mess. A few months of "polishing" and not adding content and then a final wipe is exactly not what the game needs. I'm tempted to wonder if the long drawn out process was because none of the devs had any experience coding Unity and have had to learn it as they went along, and then they realised either they or the engine weren't capable of creating the kind of game they envisioned, and they're deciding to do the best they can and then let it go...
And I'm somewhat torn on that; perhaps we are a bit entitled to think that we must always get world-shaking fantastic art when we fund an artist. Hell, I know I struggle to make great things when I try myself. A few mods here. A bit of poetry there. Some video reviews of disappointing crowd funded games linked there... but at the same time, taking money from average people who can barely afford it in today's cut throat world, and then spending years coasting on fanboy hype still seems morally wrong to me. It's the disappointment and exploitation of people who love that bugs me I think; that instead of saying "hey, we've had unexpected problems, we're only human too" they've spun and spun until only now, in Newsletter #160 is there any acknowledgement that the funding model has any negative effect on the people witnessing it.
Gahhhhhh

I don't think it's bad programming. I think it's been bad management.

Its just sausage making my friend, you are just witnessing something you don't usually have the... privilege to see before the game usually hits the shelves. You should be paying them for this insight! Oh wait...

I don't think it's bad programming. I think it's been bad management. Good managers would have been able to bring the people on board that could have built the game they were talking about; I think they were too focused on trying to work the old magic with old friends to realise until too late that they'd not learned any new tricks, and the demands of modern gaming were beyond them, or the tools they'd chosen to use. They should have done the research on Unity and then some mock ups within it's limits (map size, terrain not being able to cross etc) before deciding that was the engine for what has warped into an MMO in all but name... that's management yes, but they can't escape the consequences of it because of loyalty to each other, and the community as a whole they've built, and neither seem to be generating results, and they can't seem to escape the predicament they're in.

You know, put like that... it's an amazing cheek for the industry to say "you're not paying for the finished sausage, but to witness the making of it" now... that it's performance not product you're buying, but then try and say you're not allowed to have an opinion on the performance you've just paid to see. We're not judging sausages, in the future, but your sausage making right now. The thing that's on the ticket, remember?!

I think you might be underestimating the amount of shit this community will eat before they realize it's not a sundae. Not many are upset so far most praise them like they are the messiahs. Future customers wont be as easy to fool. If they do final wipe and the game is still unifinished and shit it will backfire on them. The backers shouldnt have to be afraid to tell them its a bad idea fearing bans. Their whole system is messed up over there. Theyre shootin themselves in their own feet by keepin backers that dont agree with them from speakin their minds. You can tell the minority poeple there that dont agree with them. In their posts you can see the way they have to be careful in their wording to keep from being seen as the devil word "NEGATIVE". The year they threw away workin on pots. Yeah they got money from it but wasted more money from havin to waste a whole year on em. They could have made way more if they didnt do the pots and finished the game last year from having more customers buy the game. Done right they could have made a boatload more without caterin to the whales with pots. How could they not see that. Awful management in this game. Never seen a game company ran so badly before.
