I thought about posting this topic after I received my Secret Santa gift (if you want to see a picture of my cute kid, click that) from boardgamegeek. It was the third year I've done a board game secret santa through their site and I've never been let down. This year, I received a brain burner called Five Tribes. I've been playing designer board games (when time permits) for the past 5 or 6 years and have a collection of about 45 games. My amazon wishlist is flooded with new games. I'm constantly looking out for them. Can't get enough though. I love the mechanics, themes, and hardware. Most of all, I love the companionship I feel with people while playing. The tactile move of a meeple, the glare when someone is trying to guess if I'm bluffing, the deep regret I feel when I realize the engine I was building since turn one was ill conceived from the get go. One of the greatest board game moments I had was beating Pandemic for the first time with my wife, cousin Jenny, and friend Hsien. We were down to our final card and somehow managed to pull out the first win for each of us. There was much nerd rejoicing around a small table we had set up in my living room. It was actually during a board game weekend we were hosting. About 18 people, friends, from As far as West Palm Beach FL and Chicago flew or drove in to spend a weekend just playing board games. I don't have a huge house, so people were sleeping on floors everywhere. Its a great memory. Its actually something my group of friends does several times a year. Maybe not to such a degree, but there's Super Bowl weekend, which essentially turns into board game weekend where we fly from Seattle or Baltimore or NYC to Florida to play games and watch the game. Once or twice a year I'll make the 3 hour drive to Maryland to play board games with Hsien and my friends who live in that area. I know Caliya is in Germany, home of SPIEL (Essen), something I'd desperately love to go to in my lifetime. Typing this all up, it sounds sort of mad, a bunch of thirty somethings flying around the country to get together to play board games. Its some of the most fun I have out of the year though and when I'm incredibly disappointed when I can't make it to one. My question is is anyone else into board games? Anyone a fan of any in particular, whether it be a specific game or style like worker placement, etc?

Just to speak to the popularity of board games, the aforementioned SPIEL in Essen Germany attracted 162,000 attendees in 4 days so they average near the same as the average day in Disney World's Magic Kingdom.

I really enjoy board games. I'm not overly great at them and I don't play them that much and when I do they typically aren't too extravagent, so probably not "brain burner" type stuff. I grew up on the standards but my enjoyment really took off after I got my first game of...

Oh my, the Germans are so into board and pen & paper games (AD&D & others). We've hosted board game evenings here already, and we've only been here since October! haha In fact, my husband's best friend from high school lives in our city, and we all used to play UO together.

After all, we generally are drinking fairly heavily when we play, so the burning of the brain is usually doused before the flames get too high.

Caliya no that is an online pic. Mine is long gone. But there was a site that had them for a decent price not long ago, I'm not sure if it was a reboot or a re-release or something. That was a few years back though. Will see if I have a book mark still laying around.

I knew RG had done an episode of Wil Wheaton's YouTube board game show Tabletop, bug lo and behold it was for the game I received from my secret Santa, Five Tribes. It's an interesting video if you are into board games or at least intrigued by them or their design. Wheaton gas done 3 seasons of the show and its probably popularized designer board games to an American audience more than anything else.
