insanemembrain.wordpress.com/2015/12/07/portalarium-burns-the-dream-of-blackstone-bluff/I realise I have probably only covered this event and news to a marginal degree, but I do hope this at least in part shows everyone out there just exactly what you will be dealing with when you decide to jump into the Shroud of the Avatar waters and swim with the Whales already there. This is me and my opinion speaking based on previous article opinion pieces I've posted and the recent news of Blake leaving SotA. Hope it does you and the situation at least some justice bblackstone .

lolwut Didn't he pull his POT out? Or is that what this post is about, that they approved the music for a POT that's being effectively scrapped and that RG is out of touch of the situation?

Technically I suppose the music will be pre-approved for whatever becomes of the POT even if it does not remain as Blackstone Bluff. But yeah, I'm guessing he didn't get the memo and obviously doesn't read my blog </3

But then there is that little issue of not knowing how to do any part of that and putting my money where my mouth is! lul. What would a simple list of requirements be for a hardcore pirate game?

Waiting for someone to release a hardcore pirate game so I dont have to design one myself. ha I'd love to make a game. But then there is that little issue of not knowing how to do any part of that and putting my money where my mouth is! lul. What would a simple list of requirements be for a hardcore pirate game? $$$ and someone that knows how to run a business. Heh. #1 - A Decent Website. A place that reflects well on the game and isn't wordpress(no offense). In the beginning, there probably wouldn't be a lot of money to spend on advertising so I'd make sure that when you surfed around it was a complete, accurately defined the game, and what you were selling. I would make sure that this was done before I ever asked anyone for a dime. Love the brochures that Star Citizen does with its ships(think this was vital to their early success). Basically somewhere that you can tell your friends to check out without feeling embarrassed. #2 - Affordable Items. In order to deter whales, items would be fairly cheap and nothing would be more than a couple hundred dollars because it can all be lost to other players. i.e. Ships would be ~$25-$100. Player Owned Ports(POPs-lulz) ~$150. #3 - Intricate Skills(Captains&Crew)/Upgrades(Ships)/Crafting(Ports). Once a base model was created it should be fairly easy to add recipes, skins, and skills. #4 - More than likely turn based combat or some form of it. Games with lower budgets can't compete on a button slapping basis. There are too many better funded games that already do this and a smaller indie type game couldn't compete on this level simply because of graphics. #5 - Simple but complex gameplay. To reach a broader market and move away from only hardcore gamers, it would need to be simple but complex. Granted no one is going to make the next Minecraft or Hearthstone, but these are good models of what people want. You jump in and can be competitive in a short amount of time. Winning or losing comes out of knowing the nuances of gameplay, not programming macros. It's 2016. #6 - Virtually no grind. Grinding sucks and is a game killer. Ain't nobody got time for that. Maybe a system like Eve that works on timers or some other inventive way to reward players for staying with the game. Not making them kill their 12th million mob. One of my friends who helped with the bluff is convinced that you should just pick you skills in the beginning and go play the game. We've all killed enough mobs in our day. Making a grind is the old WoW hook to keep subs rolling. #7 - Keep things under wraps. With a small budget, you need to ride the momentum of excitement and anticipation. My friends and I have always approached business with the idea that you don't show anyone until you can knock their socks off. Otherwise, people think you are producing crap and you've put one more notch in the fail column. Anyway, been jacking around with a storyboard but the failure with SotA makes me question pulling off the impossible. Sometimes success comes from being too stupid to realize things are impossible. Done the "impossible" a couple times in the past but SotA was a lesson to be learned. Everyone involved has to have the desire to pull the impossible into reality... BTW, Shroud is what it is. Not knocking those guys. Just not the way I would do things and it's always easy to armchair QB. As big and bad as the free market is, it will decide the fate of SotA.

Oops. Forgot the most important feature.
#8 - Real Market Trade run by the game. Auction hosting by the studio with a small percentageskimmed for secure trade. Any game that becomes a success will have RMT. Anyone that thinks it won't is living in a fantasy utopia. In fact, if you hit that point it's a sign of success. So, keep it in house and reward your players. Shouldn't be pay to win but its gonna happen regardless. The guys you actually want playing your game go to work every morning and want to relax in the evening. They typically buy gold and items from Asian farmers. Instead of shunning it, embrace it and let the people who do play all day without a job make a little coin for their efforts.

Uncharted Waters Online used to have hardcore piracy, I'm not sure what state it's currently in, but it's slowly been reduced as few of the players continued after being pirated. The current rules appear to be here. Game's a bit bland, and takes A LONG time to level in, but the sailing is kind of fun! As for assets, I assume as long as the composer has given permission, Portalarium can use his music elsewhere; I gave some cow Blazons to the College of Arms, which they're free to use too... I doubt even the people here are actively trying to sabotage the game, it's just not that good and we can't lie to ourselves that it is... weirdly, my heraldry is still registered, even though I informed them I was no longer eligible having sold off my account.

Maybe a system like Eve that works on timers or some other inventive way to reward players for staying with the game. This. Games setup like this are a real pleasure. You can focus on playing the game while it happens for you. There is something to be said for adding in a few use based skills that are lighter on the effect they have on the player and game though, you would want to reward them for active play in that fashion I would imagine. But timer stuff is great, in my opinion.

Because they're playing the game, not the level grinding system.

It looks like it would put an insomniac into a coma. "In space, no one can hear you snore." Yes, this is true but if you ever have any epic moments. There was only UO that could produce moments like them. Im goin to tell a little story. I tried Eve 4 times before I ever really gave it the time of day. To see what the game was totally about. Yes, there are lots of things that are really fucking boring, I mined for a whole year while I played. One day I was out mining and I meet some people and the story progresses. So I know very little about Eve at this point in time in the world of Eve and then Im in teamspeak one late night; I dunno about 1am. These two guys I had meet were like how about we go set a pos (player owned station) up in a c1 wormhole. I was like fuck ya cant be that difficult. Wormhole space is open season for anyone. Im a newb and am like, cant be that difficult. I hop in my t1 cruiser that I can barely fly and think Im goin to be the difference in the setup. We play like total newbs and just go and set this structure up, didnt scan a thing (lol). The other two guys are in Orcas, these are purely non combat hauling type ships they have cloaks on but the cloaks are pretty aweful on that type of ship. So all they can do is slowly move around and hopefully not get decloacked. So we place the pos and it takes like 30 mins to setup. When this structure is setup it produces a protective bubble that you can safely be inside. The cloaking mod for the ships can be deactivated if you come withing 1500m of the cloaked ship. So I dont have a cloak and im sittin by the new pos thats being setup and boom a tech3 cruiser legion pops in with his buddy a t3c proteus. So I just warp off leaving my buddies each cloaked in an Orca. Were in teamspeak and there goin omg 5000m, 4000m, 3000m holy fuck Im dead. I warp back in just when there at about 2000m and they start toward me. I warp off again and they go back to probing. This goes on for 30 minutes and it feels just about every time I warp off and come back they get a little closer to the cloaked ships, this goes on 4 or 5 times in this time span. The timer is down to :30 seconds. And the two ships are getting closer and closer to my friends. :20s They are closing in on them, Im warping back in. :10s I drop in and get targeted. :5s I die and they uncloak the two Orcas. :0 they are gunning down our haulers and the bubble didnt pop. :-3s the bubble pops pushes the other ships out and the two haulers are safe while I bit the dust. So we have a save spot with our loot safe in the wormhole and I receive a medal for dieing. The adrenaline was pumping and it was a great joy and pleasure. The time was about 6am before I logged off, cuz you know this will only take an hour right. We later on moved into a c3 wormhole. Till this day I by myself hold the wormhole. And id pay a yearly sub to keep it until someone comes to eject my ass from it. Thats what it costs for me to own my own system in a beautiful game. A game I never gave the time of day for, multiple times and thought it was complete garbage. The game is one of the most complex games to understand and become good at, if you ever really become good at it. To me after playing all the mmos Ive played. Eve and UO are the most memorable ones, nothing really has epic moments like they had. Thats what I was truly hoping for in SOTA, but unless they have a open world it will never be able to have moments or stories like this. Thanks for reading my novel, Foss

Its a true MMO and true sandbox, and the one thing about it is without some solid mates to play with its very very boring

That is fucking EVE. HELMETS ON MEN TIME FOR WARRIES! Ok so had taken a break from EVE for about 4 months, just let my skills tick over. I got the space bug again and decided to start playing. I login and unfortunately the corp had been driven out of the system, and I was there by my lonesome in my Cane. I checked local and fancied my chances getting out. I undocked and bam theres a player sitting there. Locked scrambled in seconds and he started hammering me. Now I was not prepared for pvp (rookie mistake), I was expecting a quick exit. So I asked in local "Mercy? I just resubbed! lol" I didnt have it and he blew me up. So im warping away and I get a whisper. He apologised that he didnt see the message and we started talking. He said come back. I had already lost my ship (no biggie) and he seemed cool. So i warp back to station. He proceeds to kit me out a ship, I joined his Corp and went on a roam with him. All in the space of an hour. This guy was a gun PvPer, took me under his wing and showed me some stuff. Ran with him and his mates for a few months. Was alot of fun and really got me into the PvP side of things. I still suck at pvp normally running the scram for the better guys but was cool to be part of such a good group.

Short of teleporting shit out of their holds yes. You can neut their power systems Jam their weapons Jam their targetting Scramble their warp drives Disable their propulsion And it can all happen to you !

I've tried a lot of Pirate games. When I say a lot, I mean like the ones that have existed which isn't many! Burning Sea, Crimson Steam Pirates, Age of Booty, and quite a few others. I think I liked Sid's the most. The only one people keep talking about though is Black Flag which I haven't played yet from the AC series, because I don't really enjoy those games for whatever reason.

Awww man, Black Flag was a real diversion from past Assassin's Creeds. I loved it once I got used to handling a ship (which I dreaded in the beginning because their past controls just sucked) I never tried the multiplayer, mostly because they aren't good at developing multiplayer, but I should try

So, you guys get the concept... I played Eve pretty lightly for 6 months or so, just went around and mined bc I was a little late to the party and didn't put in the time to really meet folks. But the way they have PvP, economy, and plex set up is brilliant. Take that and make it pirates with some new, refreshing ideas and you have the foundation of the making of a good game. Like IM just said, there are some pirate games out there, but nothing that is MMO amazing. And everyone seems to want pirates. I would actually throw a little twist on it and have some Traumaulian airships, Dwarven mining subs; lots of crazy ships, races, and classes. Anyway, pipe dreaming mainly but it's something that nips at the cerebrum. www.navsource.org/archives/08/0844102.jpg
