Also, as if the piece wasn't newsworthy, on its own, unless it was related to a sports player in Chicago? I would argue it is mostly newsworthy for the Chicago Tribune because of the connection to a Chicago Bears player. The Olympics are going on and there are 21 gold medal winners at current. They didn't run a story on all 21. Its a single story done because it relates to the Chicago area in some way and the title reflects how it relates to the area, why people in the area might be interested. I rarely see 'Bill Clinton's wife' listed when referring to Hilary. In fact, I think one reason people view her as unappealing is because she is a woman who defines herself outside the traditional interpretation of the dutiful wife doing charity work on the side while her husband conducts business. She isn't Barbara Bush, Nancy Reagan, or Jackie O. Lets just change this a bit as an experiment. Lets suggest that instead of being married to a Bears player, the medal winner might be the younger sister Susana Mendoza, the Chicago city clerk. It seems just as likely the headline would read similarly. Younger sister of city clerk wins gold medal. I don't think the optics on the headline are good, precisely because of complaints such as yours. It could obviously be interpreted because its a man, her victory was only noteworthy because of that. I understand that impression, but I don't agree with it as intention. It seems tied to the Chicago area in a headline generated to get readers to read the article because it relates to them. Simply saying 3 time winner wins again can't be personally related to nearly as much as person related to Chicago area wins gold medal can be. Similarly, the article doesn't state what she won the gold medal for, trapshooting i believe. This is probably also excluded because it isn't easily related to (also probably because Chicago fills its hospitals and cemeteries with the victims of gun violence) . Were she a swimmer, one might see that in the headline because people swim.

Well you can create an inestimable number of scenarios why this headline was "innocent." I believe that whoever wrote it, didn't even really think about it because it's just the way it's been in society, and the person is probably from an older generation. That would be my assumption, but there's no way to prove it.
But I am not the only person to react like this, it received quite a backlash with men, like yourself, pushing back against the complaint.
The article could have been tied to Chicago without a husband or any partner, sibling, or relative. Simply the fact she (most likely) lives in Chicago, it could have been tied in that way. Like any headline, "So-and-so war hero, from Chicago, won a purple heart". People like to hear about people in their state or hometown that win things.
She is an international contest winner. Her husband is local. She achieved a much bigger victory in my eyes.
No matter how one wants to spin it, the writer did a bad job at choosing a title.

I had no complaint they left out what she did to receive the medal. So that is a completely separate topic, unrelated to women - except in one way. Women not receiving credit for what is typically a man's realm. Guns.
But gun advocates might want to see it boasted.
When I learned what she won the medal for, I personally cringed. I thought, of course an American would win such a thing. It's so stereotypical and nothing to be particularly proud, if you asked me. But, the fact a woman did it had me laughing as well. But then, it may have been (probably was) an all-women's team, so that makes it back to cringe worthy.

Oh boy, she won against another woman from Spain. She is from Alaska originally, which definitely makes it both laughable and cringe worthy. lol >_<
(me, saying in a southern drawl...) That thar's Palin country, a stone's throw from Russia. lol
