I've posted a few times over there, not much, haven't purchased. Who's got it & who's playing?
Give us the low down.

I backed the game and play the tests, as I've said before, it's probably the closest thing that I've played to UO yet. The art style kind of isn't my thing but I have to live with it, it could be worse. The developers have been great so far and seem to have good ideas. As far as the tests go, there is very little to do, not much to explore and it seems to get very laggy at times, to the point where you use a skill and nothing happens for 5 seconds than you come out of the lag dead. The last couple of playtests barely any backers have played, the last playtest, no one was connected to the server but me the whole time that I played. The first few playtsts there were quite a few backers testing and the developers were there joining in, talking to everyone, not sure what happened. Combat, skills, whatever is barely implemented, it's there in a very basic form. Combat uses a boring auto attack system. The controls you use your mouse to move and interact, and the keyboard to use skills, etc, takes a minute to get used too. When these playtests happen they are [retty far apart most times and only are on one day, sometimes just for a couple hours. Recently they have been leaving the server up all night and shutting it down the next morning. Now would I recommend it? I am not sure at this point, I have no issues with the developers but the game is just another top down auto attack game. If you are a UO fanboy than sure, it would be worth seeing if it's for you. What worries me most about the game at the moment is wondering where the funding is coming from for development, they didn't really make off with a lot of money and there are fairly few backers. Barely knowing anything makes me wonder if that will hurt development or not. Also I'm not to sure about how Shards server system will work, sounds to gimmicky, if I play it'll only be on official servers. Anyone new thinking about coming in to playtest this game, keep in mind, there is basically nothing to do in game yet. If you have any specific questions, I could try to answer them.

I am not sure as I don't follow that close, but not quite sure if they will need the funding that Theme Park stuff like SotA will need. SO would be a shit ton of code more than anything, wouldn't it?
The best and worst part about SO I believe would be that they allow people to start up their own Clusters(Server) with Shards(individual game worlds with individual rulesets). I say worst, because you have to then deal with whatever trash bag is hosting it. There will be some official servers sure, but the powerful part about SO must be the modder community building, probably, more interesting rule sets/Shards.

Also something that I was thinking about is that as someone that doesn't give a flying fuck about aids infested player ran RP servers that most likely will be full of corruption, why would I even want to play Shards Online? why wouldn't I just go play UO? The developers of Shards Online are building a game that feels like it's from the 90's, that is similar to UO, not doing anything different from what I've seen, other than how the servers will be ran. You can't even jump in the game, lul, I'd prefer to just play UO most likely if Shards Online is just going to be a low tech UO rip off, not bringing anything new.

Well, I can speak to that some. UO like is the key, but it wont be UO and I am positive there are sure to be new systems in there that attract people away from older UO stuff. In any case, it isn't the infested RP servers I would be playing either. It is the invested PvP servers Hell it is just LUA, I might even be able to knock something up. Custom classes, skills, effects, spells, you want a cappybara in the game templara I am sure it can happen. I like custom shit. Especially if I can help custom or custom something myself. That is why I bought into SotA crowdsource marketing, and thus subsequently fucked over by it.

To what you said, I to believe the server situation is the biggest downfall, not only will there be douche bag server owners, this system splits the player base by who knows how much.

Say the plan was to stick to a basic auto attack, tab targetting game, UO pretty much did it right and covered everything well. To the point that someone could take UO's exact systems and put them into a new up to date, first person, third person world and it would be amazing. UO didn't really leave much to do different or anything else to do, they covered it, so what really is Shards going to do differently?

Yes, it does fragment a community, if you consider that all available and willing online gamers are a single community and you want every single one of them on a single cluster.
It is hard to say how well this will work out, but just look at that piece of shit mine craft, they have entire servers where 10yr old kids pop 50 bucks a month to play hunger games. That is a hard model to beat if you are a publisher selling it to 20yr olds ripping off kiddies like that...

I used to hate MineCraft too but that was before I played it. I judged it harshly because it looked retarded. Now that I gave it a chance and tried it, it's one of my favorite games, I don't play online on servers though. A lot of stuff in that game, the way monsters spawn in certain conditions makes for some very interesting game play. I've probably never had as much fun, exploring caves and stuff before. It's pretty sad that MineCraft has a better combat system than shroud by a long shot.

lulz.
I'm very eager for No Man's Sky. Procedural generated stuff is great, on that scale it is epic. Is there any Procedural generated terrain/anything in SO?

Did you see that MineCraft 3D thing they revealed at E3 I think it was?
And Shards just has a small normal open world map at the moment.

The only reason I never played Minecraft is due to its highly addictive quality. I hate being so addicted I don't sleep. lol

I like some casual games like MineCraft but one difference between the fanboys and me is that I'll admit to being casual when it happens.
Did you like that hololens? think of the stuff you could do with technology like that besides minecraft.

There's a Round Table happening tonight at 8pm if anyone wants to watch. Nothing exciting usually happens.

Nevermind, now that I looked at the schedule, it's a private round table, you'll need the right backing to join.

There are past broadcasts of it on twitch if you are bored and want to watch something, you'll probably be even more bored watching that though.

You have to skip to a time pretty far in, no idea why they start the broadcast recording so early with nothing going on.

Is this p2w now? lul, I don't think that's the problem, I'm running software through my root to remove certain things so I can't be traced, it doesn't let me access or view certain things. I basically just wanted to know if you could see it, you can delete one of the link posts than if you can.
I didn't play the last playtest on Aug 1st, it looks like the players decided to come back and they added a bunch of stuff. That broadcast is a decent one to watch if you want to get an idea of how the game is so far.

So apparently they added the ability for high enough backers to create their own modable servers already, that should be up now for me to play anytime, while the official servers will only be up at playtest times. After watching that broadcast and hearing them talk about it, one thing worries me and that is that the server owners can program npc's by using script code, their own code, whatever they like. This could possibly open up multiple ways to hack people through script or do other harmful things. I doubt I'll be playing on a player ran server because if this. I'll have to look more into how far you can go with the scripting before I'd feel safe.

Sweet, watching shortly.

I'm thinking if we have the ability to script npc's however we like and are able to decide what the npc does through script after you double click on the npc, that alone could open up a host of problems. Double clicking on one could be the activation to a whole lot of different harmful situations through script. When double clicking you are basically accepting activation of whatever script lies behind the double click, people could make you open up 1000000000 browsers or do whatever they please with your computer. Hopefully this isn't truly how it's going to be.

I finally checked out the game today. The concept sounds amazing and what Shroud should've been. So what if it's a UO ripoff. The graphics aren't great, but better than UO. It seems to have far more flexibility too. Modding and creating your own content, building your own house and property, etc. I'm seriously considering investing even though I said I'd never do that again.
