Not to be confused with Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Star Wars: The Old Republic (SWTOR) is a AAA budget MMORPG that tanked hard upon release due to bugs, general issues, and the unexpected issue of every single player falling to the dark side and eradicating the jedi from the galaxy. Since that time, they've been trying desperately to salvage their game, going as far as making it F2P (though there are still subscription options).
A friend of mine who loves the game tried to get me into it in the past, but I dropped it after 20 minutes. Seeing 20 clones of my character running around mindlessly grinding the same quest that I was doing made me sick, especially in light of the fact that nobody spoke to anybody else. The combat wasn't terrible, but it was an uncreative WoW clone with an overemphasis on hotbars.
If anyone plays the game for the PvP or the communal interaction, I won't judge you, but at this point I'm only considering retrying the game for the SP story line elements. My friend hypes them well, and the fact that it's in the Star Wars universe is a huge plus for me. So, has anyone played SWTOR at all?

Srsly tho, my main issue with TOR is that they did this shit to my favourite Universe. I mean wtf, raids, killing revans 1000 times in a row ( ), hundreds of people with lightsabers running around. It is horrible, ugly, and pure blasphemy, and I wouldnt EVER play this even if it was perfect gameplay-wise.

That sounds terrifying Templar. Is the RPG side of it that bad too?

Oh biggest turn off is the broken patching system. It's ducking horrid.
130meg patch turned into a complete review download. And it wasn't an isolated case

It took me over a week to patch, but after playing 20 hours, I've drawn some conclusions. SWTOR has an alright storyline, akin to KotOR, but with way more filler (my estimate is 90% filler). The immersion-breaking that Templar mentions is painful to experience. I'm not sure why it's an MMO at all, since the combat isn't worthy of PvP and nobody talks to anyone in game.
When you see other players, they're either running with you towards the same quest marker or in the opposite direction having had completed the quest. The first planet is especially painful, because every single person is the same class as you. It doesn't help when everyone has the same droid as you too and the same padawan following them.
It's hard to take Master Orgus seriously when he claims that the Coruscant market sector is overrun with gangsters, since there is an excess of players waiting there to slaughter the gansters as they respawn. This kind of experience kills the flow of the plot. Imagine you're heading to stop some evil Sith Lord from destroying Coruscant, and right before you reach him, you see some other jedi heading in the opposite direction, or even worse, ten jedi heading in the opposite direction. I guess they already took care of it? The world is so linearly built that you can't even try and tell yourself that they were doing something else. There is only one destination in that direction, and it is only used for this one part of that one class' story.
Despite the clearly gigantic budget SWTOR had, the game feels much less personal than KotOR 1 and 2 did. The movement is similar to SotA, except in SotA, you don't expect to be able to use the force to jump over a small obstacle, so it isn't as irksome when you find that you can only jump a normal height. Approximately 10 of the 20 hours I played were spent running from one point to another. The combat is a hotbar WOW clone in which you stare at your hotbar and press the same order of buttons in perfect time until you hear the lightsaber get put away.
On a side note, whenever a SotAphant says "But in UO you just press the same buttons in the same order over and over. That's why SotA's random combat is better!" a piece of me dies, because they think they're describing UO, but they're really describing WOW and SWTOR. If anyone reading this is guilty of saying the aforementioned quote, at least now you know why you couldn't PvP in UO.
So anyway, I walk into a special meeting with two other jedi, the senator of Coruscant, the military commander guy, and an important doctor. They each say one line, and immediately I'm certain that the doctor is a traitor. He didn't say anything that betrayed his identity, but the voice actor for him was so obviously and generically evil that anyone could quickly see that he must be an undercover bad guy. When he had to leave the meeting early, I only had wished that I had an option to just stop him there and save myself the long jogging session (since there is no sprint). After a nice long run though, I killed him in under 5 seconds, only to get destroyed by a single droid later, because the entire game is excessively leveled to help guide players through the theme park in the appropriate order. No detours kids!
The story is solid overall, but the dialogue structure can be frustrating. As is seen in some other games, when you make a dialogue option in SWTOR, you instead just say something else. Most of the time you say something similar to what you selected, but other times things get messed up pretty bad. For example, after hearing an friendly doctor (guess who) NPC's plan of attack, I was given three options:
1. Sounds good to me. 2. This will be almost too easy. 3. I'm not certain your strategy is the best approach.
Since I wasn't sure that their strategy was the best approach, I respectfully told them, or so I thought. After selecting option 3 though, my character went on to make a pompous prick of himself, explaining that the plan is foolish and poorly designed, going as far as to shittalk the NPC. No wonder he betrayed everyone. He probably selected option 2 on his dialogue wheel, "I'm going to carry out the plan even if you think it is bad," only to end up saying, "I will kill you all and destroy Coruscant for opposing my plan!"
In short, this game would be less painful (and less expensive) if it were packaged and sold as a SP game (sound familiar?). For a AAAA game, the combat was a direct rip from WOW, the MMO elements had no place, the story was monotonous and difficult to take seriously (Welcome to Tython, I'm your master, padawan, now save me from this sith who was able to defeat me. Good job, that looked easy for you!), and the world is needlessly huge and feels more empty than alive.
